Beer Review: Hop City - Cheat Day Black Forest Porter

Well this will be the inaugural Beer review, and really why not start with something that seems a little off the wall.  Hop City released their Cheat Day Black Forest Porter, and well as the title implies, it has that black forest cake flavour to it.  I know what you are thinking, "how can a beer that tastes like black forest cake actually be somewhat good?"  Well if you continue to read below, you will either be surprised or if you are a black forest cake fan, then well you wont be surprised at all...

Think of this marrying of flavors like putting jelly onto a peanut butter sandwich.  It just kinda works.

Before we get into the meat and potatoes of the review, or well the desert portion of the review, for more information of Hop City Brewing, click on the below link.  They make many really delicious beers!

With the reviews done in the past, going to hit on several things, such as appearance, taste, smell test and just overall goodness or lack of goodness.

Without further ado;

Appearance:  The initial appearance, was the can... Which was a reddish satin colour.  Once the can was opened, and luckily enough for me a glass was handy, as you can tell by the below photo, it looks like a typical porter.  Deep dark body colour, with a beige foamy head on it.  Just an all in all good looking beer.

Smell / Aroma:  Well as you would think with a Black forest cake type of beer, the smell was sweet.  You got notes of chocolate, cheery, and cake... yup cake.  It really didn't smell like a beer whatsoever.

Taste:  Really the main selling feature of a beer is the taste.  If something doesn't taste good, the odds of you getting it again are slim to none.  So at the end of the day, all you really remember is the taste of the beer.  Cheat Day was no exception, because you will not forget the taste, cause like the title implies, it is like drinking a black forest cake, but in porter form.   In the flavor profile, you have hints of chocolate as well as cherry.  There wasn't an overpowering bitterness to the body of the beer, but there was just enough to still know you were drinking a porter.  For me personally, the sweetness was a little high, but I'm not a huge fan of sweets, so for someone who is, they would love this beer!

Overall:  Overall, the beer did not disappoint.  Hop City continues to pump out excellent beer, and this on is no exception.  It is a different flavor but at the end of the day was really good.  I would for sure go out and buy this again!
