Beer Review: Belhaven Scottish Ale

Another successful year in the books, and with the wrap of 2018 festivities comes many various and random beers given as gifts and or purchased at the local LCBO.  The holiday season is great for that, stuff you would never see the other 364 days of the year.  Such as the Belhaven Scottish Ale.  I personally have not seen it, or I really haven’t looked for it, but I was gifted it and during New Year’s festivities consumed 1.  Yes, only 1, because it was a mixer pack, and there was only 1 in the case.

Belhaven Brewery is a United Kingdom based brewery from Dunbar.  If you are like me and have never been there, I can only imagine how nice it is.   Check out their website at:  https://www.belhaven.co.uk/

One of the beers in the mixer pack was Belhaven Scottish Ale.  Now whether you can buy just a single at the LCBO or not I’m not 100% sure, but that being said, it comes in the holiday mixer pack.
As you can tell by the below photo, it pours a nice hazel colour.  Yeah hazel, expanding the colour pallet as well as the taste pallet.  The head was also a nice beige colour, which lasted several minutes after pouring.

Carbonation was typical for an ale, with a nice body.  It sounds like I know what I’m talking about eh… In all honesty though, the whole drink was great from start to finish.  There was no emptiness or anything like that.  Typical to Scottish Ales, there was a great mix of caramel toffee (hence the colour) and malts.  This gave the beer a solid balance.  There was no bitterness or strong hops, so if you are opposed to the “stronger” flavored beers than this one would be right up your ally.   Overall, it went down nice and smooth, which was appreciated.  Sometimes you get a beer where you struggle to finish it, but this was not the case with the Belhaven Scottish Ale.

Overall, sitting at 5.20 ABV which isn’t too bad, the Scottish Ale was a great beer from start to finish.  Nice that it wasn’t hitting the high ABV levels, and nice that it had a good flavor profile to back everything up.  If you can find this as a single beer, or even the mixer pack, pick it up.  You won’t be disappointed in the Scottish Ale.
